Carpet “First Aid”: What to Do Immediately After a Spill
September 3rd, 2019Accidental spillages often occur at the most inconvenient of times. Unfortunately, red wine, coffee, and pet urine can leave unsightly stains and unpleasant odors on our carpets. Here at Sir Carpet, we’re the top-rated carpet and upholstery cleaning company in Phoenix, AZ and the surrounding areas. And we know how frustrating it can be when you accidentally spill something on your rug. We’ve listed some steps below explaining what to do immediately after a carpet spill, to reduce lasting damage. Let’s take a look:
Step One
Fill up two empty spray bottles, one with warm water and ¼ teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid and one with cold water.
Step Two
Spray the soap solution onto an absorbent cloth (do not spray it directly onto the carpet, you don’t want to wet the area too much). Dab the area with the cloth (you shouldn’t rub). As the stain begins to dissolve, blot away the liquid with a clean section of the cloth. Repeat this process over and over again until the stain disappears.
Step Three
Spray a clean cloth with the cold water, use this to rinse away the detergent solution from the carpet area. Once this has been completed, blot away the area once with a dry cloth.
Step Four
Place a stack of paper towels on the area, and weigh these down using a heavy pot or book. Leave this in place overnight, and the sheets will suck up any residual stains that have penetrated deep into the carpet. In the morning, use your fingers to ‘fluff’ the carpet fibers out and then leave them to air-dry.
Step Five
If the stain is still present, we recommend taking a more targeted approach or calling in a professional carpet cleaning company, like Sir Carpet, to assist with eradicating the spillage.
Professional carpet cleaning services help to extend the life of your carpet. Dirt, allergens, dust, and other debris accumulate over time in the carpet and can get embedded in fibers. Eventually, this causes the fibers to split and deteriorate. By removing this build-up of debris, the longevity of a carpet is increased.
Professionals use hot water extraction methods to efficiently remove dust and dirt from deep within fibers. Between cleanings, homeowners can decrease levels of debris by regularly vacuuming.
